In order to become a licensed nail tech in Illinois, you must meet the following requirements:

1) At least 16 years of age.
2) Are beyond the age of compulsory school attendance or has a certificate of graduation from a school providing secondary education or the recognized equivalent of that certificate; and
3) A graduate of a cosmetology or nail technology school approved by the Division to teach nail technology, that includes a program of 350 hours in the study of nail technology extending over a period of not less than 8 weeks nor more than 2 consecutive years.

As a nail technician:
(a) Be sixteen and one-half (16 1/2) years of age.

According to the Florida State Board of Cosmetology:

A "nail specialist" means a person registered to engage in the practice of manicuring and pedicuring in the State of Florida. Manicuring means the cutting, polishing, tinting, coloring, cleansing, adding, or extending of the nails, and massaging of the hands. This term includes any procedure or process for affixing of artificial nails, except those nails which may be applied by a simple adhesive.
